Psoriasis – About Treating Plaque Psoriasis

November 13th, 2009

You can have no appreciation for how uncomfortable psoriasis can be unless you have this skin disease. Psoriasis (sometimes misspelled soriasis or sporiasis) is a skin disorder that shows up in the form of red, inflamed, flaky skin. All areas of the skin are vulnerable. Psoriasis itches, often is painful and is embarrassing when it appears on commonly exposed areas of the body. (Continued below…)

Roughly 80% of cases are what is called plaque psoriasis. Treatment for plaque psoriasis can be quite effective.

Many who are afflicted with this skin condition just want to crawl down a hole. They’re reluctant to go out in public and they become willing to try anything to get rid of it, or at best, to find relief for the symptoms. There is plenty of help available, however, and it’s as near as your local dermatologist’s office.

Be Sure the Diagnosis is Psoriasis

It’s unecessary for you to continue suffering if you suspect you have psoriasis. You should immediately see a dermatologist. If you don’t have one, go to the nearest one – just get there! Or, if you have insurance, ask your provider which dermatologists in your area they will cover.

In the initial consultation with a dermatologist, it will be immediately apparent whether you have psoriasis. If that is the diagnosis, your dermatologist will then determine the severity. Most cases can be cured by a topical cream, usually prescription strength. If the case is severe, your dermatologist will have other options to pursue and will discuss those with you. The most important thing to remember is that your dermatologist specializes in skin disorders, such as psoriasis, and will know what appropriate psoriasis treatment will enable you to become free of symptoms.

Patience on your part will be required, since symptoms will not clear up rapidly. In fact, it can take weeks or months for all of your symptoms to disappear. You can try to cover up with clothing to cope with your embarrassment, but you should know that psoriasis is common. Many people suffer from it and live with it every day. There are more serious skin diseases, and psoriasis is relatively mild compared to some.

Most skin disorders become worse unless treated, including psoriasis. So, it’s critical to make that appointment with your dermatologist. You could be pleasantly surprised to discover that it’s not psoriasis, but simply a rash. You can take comfort in the fact that treatments for psoriasis often control the disease for long periods. Just be aware that currently medicine has no cure for the disease. It can flare up again when treatment stops.

If it is psoriasis, though, let your dermatologist help you. You dont have to bury your head in the sand. Get the help you need and feel good about yourself again.
