Medical treatment for psoriasis, for the most part, focuses on using cortisone based products. Medical science, in fact, has been challenged to find a cure for this distressing skin disorder. An outbreak of psoriasis is characterized by flaky, blotchy, red colored skin caused by a mysterious acceleration in the production of skin cells.

It's as if skin cell production has gone on fast forward. No cure has been found. All that can be done is to try reducing psoriasis symptoms.

Vitamin A Makes New Skin and Counteracts Inflammation

This is not to say that cortisone based products will not provide relief from symptoms of psoriasis. However, there are side effects which can cause further damage to the skin and patients have been known to develop a lifelong dependence on cortisone.

Well controlled studies have shown that vitamin A will help skin cells grow to maturity before shedding. Among other things, using vitamin A for psoriasis has corollary benefits in preventing infections in mucous membranes. It nourishes the skin, counteracts inflammations and helps protect cell membranes and other cell structures from damage by free radicals.

Natural sources of vitamin A for psoriasis are found in liver, fish oils and egg yolk. An adult should ideally take 2.500-5000 IE and if there is excess of vitamin A, it will be stored in the liver, and is usually produced synthetically. The benefits of Vitamin A for psoriasis are seen in increased blood flow, stimulation of the skin as well as providing protection from sunburn. For severe cases, an especially potent form of vitamin A called etretinate (Tegison) is available for psoriasis.

Taking off the shelf vitamin supplements for psoriasis have not been shown to be effective when taken in daily recommended doses. Also, taking large doses of vitamin D for psoriasis has not been found to be effective and may even be dangerous. One should take the advice of a doctor prior to trying vitamins for psoriasis, especially as there are many vitamins and natural supplements that are not safe (even dangerous) when consumed in large and continuous doses.

Another, alternative approach to treating psoriasis is exposure to sun and salt water. The Dead Sea, where the below sea level elevation protects from harmful sun rays and the water is especially salty has become a mecca for psoriasis sufferers. Indeed, it has been found that sunlight and water are natural therapies that may help improve psoriasis. As many as eighty percent of those that have tried regular daily doses of sunlight have seen noticeable improvement in their psoriasis condition.

As medical research into psoriasis continues, There also are widely divergent views expressed on the effects of particular diets, including vitamins for psoriasis, that can help establish and provide a clear and definitive solution to the problem.
